Day 1 Negombo

On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 2 Negombo – Dambulla – Sigiriya (145 km)

Set off from coastal Negombo to experience the inland delights of Sri Lanka where you may choose an optional visit to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Relish this picturesque journey as you pass Kurunagala’s towering Lord Buddha statue upon a rock, the rice paddy fields and more. Visit Dambulla Rock Cave Temple which is the largest preserved cave temple complex in the country. These caves contain statues and paintings that chronicle Lord Buddha and his life. (B)

Day 3 Polonnaruwa – Minneriya

Visit the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress, whose frescoes are world renowned for their awe-inspiring beauty. Continue to the World Heritage ancient city of Polonnaruwa and Minneriya National Park, home to a wide array of flora & fauna, where one may see herds of elephants throughout the year. (B)

Day 4 Sigiriya – Kandy (110 km)

Today visit Spice Garden in Matale where you will be shown how spices are grown and processed. The magnificent city of Kandy is famous for its rich heritage and splendour and was the last royal capital before colonisation. The Temple of the Tooth Relic is the most significant highlight of the city along with Kandy Lake. (B)

Day 5 Kandy

Explore the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, home to over 4,000 species of plants including the most beautiful orchids. Walk the famous Avenue of Palms and visit the Cannonball Tree planted by King George V. (B)

Day 6 Kandy – Nuwara Eliya (180 km)

Visit a tea plantation and a tea factory, where the best tea in the world is produced. Observe how the quality of tea is graded and walk through the manufacturing process. Savour the taste of a cup
of pure Ceylon in the factory. (B)

Day 7 Nuwera Eliya – Kitulgala – Koggala (320 km)

Kitulgala is in a beautifully lush rainforest, getting two monsoons each year. The Academy award winning Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed here, although all that remains are concrete foundations for the bridge and, supposedly, the submerged train cars
that plunged into the river in the climactic scene. (B)

Day 8 Galle

Galle is located on the south coast and remains the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese during their occupation. The Fort is a world heritage site and the most important landmark in the city. The Dutch Museum and Church also reflect further colonisation. Galle is renowned for its intricate lace and ebony carvings. (B)

Day 9 Koggala – Colombo (130 km)

In Colombo you will take a fascinating walk amongst a variety of colonial architecture, colourful mosques and Hindu kovils. Pick up unusual gifts to take home from streets devoted to a different product whether it is gold, colourful garlands, Ayurveda products or dried fish. Sample typical Sri Lankan street food, as well as tasty Indian dosa. The atmosphere at the hundred year old vegetable market is unbeatable as are the characters that you will meet along the way. (B)

Day 10 Colombo
